Expedition 2006: The Return |
Beginning August 14, 2006, the Flight of Discovery will follow the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail (NHT) from Oregon to Missouri. The on-trail portion of the expedition is expected to take two weeks. As can be seen from the schedule which follows, there are two are two distinct segments to the 2006 expedition: the Columbia-Snake-Upper Missouri River(Week #1) and the Middle and Lower Missouri River (Week #2). There is also an optional Mississippi-Ohio River-West Virginia segment (Week #3) if time and finances permit continuance of the FOD to Washington, DC. The purpose of the 2006 FOD Expedition is to add to the body of information already collected over the last two flights along the NHT through additional observation, collection of samples and continued support of Trunk of Discovery programs at local schools and museums. Ultimately, this data will be used to develop an overall statement of natural resource and cultural change since the time of Lewis and Clark. Initial plans are to have the Flight stop at all points where a Trunk of Discovery is located or at the closest airport facility. Plans are also in the works to coordinate the 2006 expedition with other Bicentennial activities and organizations, such as the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail Foundation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and others.
At the very least, please plan on meeting us at one of our many waypoints along the Trail or follow along with us as we upload our photos and journals daily onto this website.
